UL Certified Lighting Explained
What is UL Certification?
UL Certification indicates that a product has been independently evaluated by UL Solutions and found to meet the requirements of the applicable safety standards. Depending on the product and the scope of the evaluation, it may carry a UL Certified, UL Listed, UL Classified or UL Recognised Component mark. UL Certified products are also subject to ongoing factory inspections to confirm that production continues to meet the certification requirements.
Safety Standards
The applicable requirements vary by product type and may cover:
- Electrical safety: Wiring, insulation and components are assessed to reduce the risk of electric shock and overheating.
- Fire safety: Materials and construction are evaluated for potential fire risks.
- Mechanical safety: The product is assessed for structural integrity and safe operation.
- Thermal safety: Testing confirms that the product operates safely within its specified temperature limits.
- Environmental conditions: Where applicable, products may be assessed for conditions such as humidity and temperature changes.
- Electromagnetic compatibility: Where applicable, products may be evaluated for electromagnetic interference.

- Testing against the applicable safety standards
- Ongoing factory inspections to confirm continued compliance
Understanding UL Certifications: Certified, Listed, Classified, and Recognised
UL Solutions uses several certification marks, each with a specific meaning:
- UL Certified (Enhanced UL Certification Mark): The enhanced UL Certification Mark can represent UL Listed or UL Classified certification. It may also show the certification scope, applicable countries and a unique identification number.
- UL Listed: Used mainly for complete, end-use products that have been evaluated against applicable safety requirements.
- UL Recognised: Used for components and subassemblies intended to form part of a larger UL Certified product. These components must be used under specified conditions.
- UL Classified: Indicates that a product has been evaluated for specific properties, hazards, applications or operating conditions.
Each mark applies only to the certification scope shown on the product label or within its UL certification record.
UL Certified vs EU Standards
UL Certification and CE marking both relate to product conformity, but they operate under different systems and are not interchangeable. UL Certification involves independent evaluation against applicable North American safety standards. CE marking indicates that a product complies with the relevant European Union legislation and is supported by the manufacturer’s declaration of conformity.

Cables
Where product images show twisted fabric cable, the UL Certified version will be supplied with round braided cable in black or brown.
Ceiling Roses and Wall Brackets/Backplates
North American junction boxes often require larger canopies and sconce mounting brackets or backplates. Where necessary, we automatically replace the standard component with a larger version suitable for installation in the United States and Canada.
The standard 3.9" (10 cm) pressed bracket and 3.35" (8.5 cm) IP wall plate are replaced with a larger 4.7" (12 cm) pressed bracket or canopy.
The standard 3.9" (10 cm) cast dome is replaced with a larger 4.6" (11.7 cm) cast dome.
The standard 3.15" (8 cm) cast cone and 2.6" (6.6 cm) Sacred Heart brackets are replaced with a larger 4.5" (11.5 cm) cast cone bracket.
The 5.5" × 1.6" × 0.8" (14 × 4 × 2 cm) and 15.75" × 1.75" × 0.8" (40 × 4.5 × 2 cm) rectangular sconce mounting bracket remains unchanged..

How to identify a UL Certified Product
A UL Certified product can be identified by the certification label on the fitting. Depending on the mark used, the label may include the UL symbol, certification designation, applicable country codes and a unique identification or file number.
Where to find our certification label
On wall lights, the UL certification label is usually located behind the sconce mounting bracket plate or bracket. On pendant lights, ceiling lights and chandeliers, it is typically located inside the canopy. The quality control label, which includes the manufacturing date and inspection details, is usually located nearby.
