Explanation of Symbols

At Mullan Lighting we're proud of the accreditations we have earned to ensure our products are not only manufactured to the highest standards, but are sustainable produced, limiting our impact on the environment around us. Below is a short explanation of some of the symbols and quality assurance marks found on our website.

CE Mark

CE mark

The CE mark is a mandatory conformity marking for certain products - including light fixtures - sold within the European Economic Area (EEA) and indicates the compliance with EU legislation of a product. It's also found on products that are manufactured in the EEA but sold outside the EEA and is therefore an internationally recognisable symbol of compliance to EU legislation regarding product safety, health, quality and environmental protection. It is similar to the FCC Declaration of Conformity used on certain electronic goods sold in the United States.

UL Listed

UL Certified

The UL symbol means the product, after a series of testing, meets the UL nationally recognised Standards of Safety. UL is an American non-profit organisation dedicated to public safety and Mullan Lighting is proud to have the majority of its products UL listed. Our UL Certifications ensure our fixtures are safe to use in both the US and Canada.

UKCA

UK Conformity Assessed

The UKCA mark is a conformity marking for certain products being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). It demonstrates that the product complies with the applicable UK regulations and standards. The UKCA marking came into effect on January 1, 2021, following the UK's departure from the EU.

SASO

SASO

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation (SASO) is a standards and conformity authority in Saudi Arabia. Goods being imported into Saudi Arabia must be accompanied by a Certificate of Conformity (CoC). This certification is available on request.

Waterproof Symbol

Waterproof symbol

This water droplets symbols indicates that the product is moisture-resistant and suitable for use in bathrooms and outdoors. The product has a minimum IP rating of IP44 (most are IP54), meaning it is protected from water spray from any direction.

Class I Protection Symbol

Class 1

A Class I (Class 1) appliance is one that must have its body connected to electrical earth by a separate earth conductor. The earth connection is achieved using a 3-core cable.

Class II Protection Symbol

Class 2

A Class II (Class 2) or double insulated electrical appliance (light fixture) is one which has been designed in such a way that it does NOT require a safety connection to electrical earth (ground). An added layer of safety against electrical shock is achieved by using double layers of insulating material or reinforced insulation protecting any live parts of the fitting.

What does IP rating mean?

IP rating is a two-digit number used to provide an Ingress Protection rating to electronic products (like our light fixtures). The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects while the second digit represents protection against ingress of liquids (water). The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection. For example, a product rated IP54 (like our outdoor lights) is better protected against environmental factors than a product rated IP20 (like most of our indoor pendant lights).

IP First digit: Ingress of solid objects Second digit: Ingress of liquids
1 No protection No protection
2 Protected against solid objects over 50mm e.g. hands, large tools. Protected against vertically falling drops of water or condensation.
3 Protected against solid objects over 12.5mm e.g. hands, large tools. Protected against falling drops of water, if the case is disposed up to 15 from vertical.
4 Protected against solid objects over 2.5mm e.g. wire, small tools. Protected against sprays of water from any direction, even if the case is disposed up to 60 from vertical.
5 Protected against solid objects over 1.0mm e.g. wires. Protected against splash water from any direction.
6 Limited protection against dust ingress. (no harmful deposit) Protected against low pressure water jets from any direction. Limited ingress permitted.
7 Totally protected against dust ingress. Protected against high pressure water jets from any direction. Limited ingress permitted.
8 Protected against short periods of immersion in water.
9 Protected against long, durable periods of immersion in water.
