Hakkaiza on the harbour: industrial restaurant design evolves with Nordic influence

Hakkaiza, an Asian restaurant situated on Sørenga harbour in Norway's capital, has taken the idea of industrial restaurant design and refined it by adding an appropriate serving of Nordic influence. While the wave of industrial restaurant design shows no sign of abating, the design concept is beginning to be adopted and merged with other design disciplines. It's hardly surprising that a restaurant in Oslo, looking out across the fjord, be the place that industrial meets Scandinavian influence.Hakkaiza, an Asian restaurant situated on Sørenga harbour in Norway's capital, has taken the idea of industrial restaurant design and refined it by adding an appropriate serving of Nordic influence. An abundant use of wood and aged leather create a warm atmosphere An abundant use of wood and aged leather creates a warm atmosphere Parts of the restaurant are conventionally industrial - a design trend that has become very popular over the last decade or so. The exposed ducting below the graphite-painted ceiling and the polished concrete floor communicate this conventional industrialism. Everything else in between, however, feels more refined - more Scandinavian. Aged leather and a distressed grey-painted wall create a familiar inviting setting within this industrial restaurant Aged leather and a distressed grey-painted wall create a familiar, inviting setting within this industrial restaurant When dining out, the atmosphere is often as important as the food. Hakkaiza augments its culinary experience with an inviting, warm space. This warmth is created by an abundant use of materials like varying shades of timber, aged leather seating and warm light from our exposed bulb Lome pendants throughout. LED squirrel-cage Edison bulbs glow orange in colour and can be dimmed down to further remove any industrial harshness. Although the restaurant is rustic and industrial, it still feels warm and inviting. Smoked oak chairs with leather seats suggest comfort and influence by Scandinavian design Smoked oak chairs with leather seats suggest comfort and influence by Scandinavian design Nordic influence is felt most in the restaurant's furniture. The chairs are simple and typically Scandinavian in a smoked oak finish. A small, shelved console table with oak tops and light, washed oak legs helps create a lighter palette than would otherwise be associated with industrial restaurant design. The wood itself isn't heavy, but refined. Two large antiquated console tables help establish an entrance hallway and create two distinct dining areas. The abundant use of space makes the restaurant feel lighter and more airy. A large tree with pink flowers planted in an ornate, blue ceramic pot, serves to connect the interior of the restaurant with it Asian origins. Another grass-like plant in the corner of the restaurant helps create balance over the industrial nature of some interior elements.
